Hi there!

In our networkw have an image server containing linux OS and
application software images. We would like to setup blank machines
with an image of the image server over the network (boot by CD or flop
and then download image over the network). After setting up, the
machines will be used in the network to tune the software after which
they will be shipped to customers.
To reduce the setup time, we don't want to set network params.

So, is it possible to have the IP data *including* a random hostname
to be distributed by DHCP? This way, the setup time is minimized. Any
pointers appreciated.

Thanks,

Ray

DHCP can do this. It's up to the individual server as to whether (and
how) it's supported.

Which DHCP servers on Linux are available? Tried to find an overview
of servers, but did not succeed...

Thanks again,

Ray

Where did you look?

Most distributions probably ship ISC's DHCP server. All you have to do
is configure it and activate it. See the various man pages and look for
the sample configuration files which are included.

A look at Freshmeat also showed this one for embedded systems:
http://freshmeat.net/projects/udhcp/
As such it's probably less featureful than the ISC dhcpd. But the point
here is to introduce you to Freshmeat, the main clearinghouse for free
software and POSIX-compatible projects. Don't leave home without it.
