How can I determine IP address of attached device without its MAC?

Is there a way that I can determine the MAC address or IP address of a second
hand device that I have aquired. I use 10.x.x.x addresses here, but I believe
that the device used 192.168.x.x addresses. I plugged in a laptop, and wrote a
script to ping 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.255, but I could not find it,
so I think it has been set up maybe with 192.168.1.x or 192.168.2.x or maybe
something else.

Unfortunately, I do not know the MAC address of the device. I think that the
sticker has come off, and there is no factory reset button to return the
address to a sensible default.

I know that the device has been configured with a static address. I need to
know the address so that I can telnet it and configure it for my network.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Mark.

Assuming the device isn't always quiet, you could put it on the same
hub as some system (or connect it back-to-back with same, or configure
your switch to "mirror" the port to which the device is connected...)
on which you can run some traffic sniffing program (eg tcpdump or
wireshark). Then, with the sniffer running, power-on the device and
see what sort of traffic you get.

Probably best done with an otherwise private network to make it easier
to ignore other traffic.

Many systems, on power-up, will issue a gratuitous (?) ARP from which
you can find its configured IP address.

Other ideas would center around web searching for various words and
phrases you might find on the device in hopes of finding a product
manual or some way to reset to factory defaults and knowledge of those
defaults.

The real question is "Can it be patched?"
these opinions are mine, all mine; HP might not want them anyway...
feel free to post, OR email to rick.jones2 in hp.com but NOT BOTH...

I tried that wireshark over a private network with the device connected to a
laptop. It worked. Cheers for that.

Mark.
