Assuming the device isn't always quiet, you could put it on the same
hub as some system (or connect it back-to-back with same, or configure
your switch to "mirror" the port to which the device is connected...)
on which you can run some traffic sniffing program (eg tcpdump or
wireshark). Then, with the sniffer running, power-on the device and
see what sort of traffic you get.
Probably best done with an otherwise private network to make it easier
to ignore other traffic.
Many systems, on power-up, will issue a gratuitous (?) ARP from which
you can find its configured IP address.
Other ideas would center around web searching for various words and
phrases you might find on the device in hopes of finding a product
manual or some way to reset to factory defaults and knowledge of those
defaults.
