Hi
I am very confused about CISCO router. I have a CISCO 1600 router and
what I see in the back of the router the following ports/outputs:

10baseT, Ethernet0, AUI, serial0, console, flashPC card, 14v VDC

Why I am confused! becuase lets say we have 4 computers, how can I
connect them using CISCO router. I have linkSys router and it has WAN,
LAN, and 4 RJ45 ports, so I can use linkSys router to coonect these
computer but not the CISCO!! Am I right.. I think I need something
else beside the CISCO router! what is it?? I do not know

Thanks a lot.

Hubs and switches are for connecting computers. Routers are for
routing. Some routers have a multiport switch tacked on.

You need a multiport hub or switch. If you're only connecting 4
computers you'll need at least a 5 port hub, the extra port being for
the link from the hub to the routers 10baseT port.

That is a router with a built in 4 port hub.

This router is designed to connect networks together over a high speed
leased line.

Ethernet0 or AUI is used to connect the local network to the router.
serial0 is the WAN (wide area network) or internet side.

you need an ethernet hub/switch to connect computers together.

Esara
You sound very new to all this, i strongly recommend like Rob that you
understand the basics of networking and computers communications before
you attempt to config a (virtual) router. If you don't understand TCP
UDP IP you have no chance of config a router and you will only confuse
your self more, and more than likely give up.

What do you intend to get out of this exercise??

That looks like it's seriously old. Nothing recent has pure 10baseT or
AUI. I'm not sure what "ethernet0" is. Does it look a bit like a TV ariel
connector with lumps on the side? If so it's BNC, also ancient. Network
hardware typically had those three 5-10 years ago. Nowadays you normally
get just the one RJ45 socket which supports 10baseT, 100baseTX and, on
high end stuff, gigabit too, on the one connection. BNC and AUI are dead.
I suspect that this is a very old industrial strength router which has
been rescued from the skip into which it was deservedly hurled.

I wouldn't use this thing, but if you want to, connect a hub or switch to
the 10baseT port. I'm not sure what you'd use to connect the other side to
- Graham says serial0 is the WAN interface but it isn't clear to me
exactly what this is. Probably something which isn't available any more.

It's almost certain to be a pig to configure too. I think you'll have
to connect a terminal to the port marked "console" to do so. A PC running
hyperterminal or minicom and a null modem cable is probably what's
required.

Even modern Cisco routers aren't child's play, if they were network admins
would be much poorer

Regards, Ian

Ethernet 0 is the name of the interface. Its a standard RJ45 connector.

Tis funny, I've got a Cisco Series 1600 router on a site at the
moment, it's no more than 12 months old.
