Can a cable modem kill a router?

I have an SMC 2404WBR wireless router. It was working fine with AT&T service
using a Motorola SB4200 Surfboard modem. I changed to RCN, with a 3Com
OfficeConnect cable modem. When I connected the router to the new modem, it
worked but kept closing the connection (which I could restore with a
Release/Renew) and it was also running quite hot. As I kept looking for
configurations that would work, the router got flakier. Now it doesn't seem
to respond at all, and none of my systems can see it.

Is this likely just a coincidence or has anyone seen examples of this in the
past?

I have never heard of this before and could be it was just the router on
it's way out --- defective. If the router is new, take it back and get a
replacement.
