Hi Everyone,

I'm new to all of this ADSL lark, and was wondering if anyone could
recommend a cheapish ADSL router/switch. Have been looking into the D-Link
504 which seems to do what I want, but I'm sure I could get something
similar for less!!

I need to connect 4 PC's to it, and want to be able to block certain ports
in either direction, do NAT etc. Will probably be going with Pipex 512k if
it makes any difference.

Any ideas anyone? All advice (good or bad) much appreciated.

Dan

Thomson Speedtouch 510v4 has done a good job for me -only minor drawback
is configuring the firewall by CLI. NAT, etc. can all be done via the
web interface though.

www.ebuyer.co.uk

quickfind code: 48449

Model: ASR-8400

Cost: £38.99+VAT

There have been several mentions on the group, and it does appear to have
a usable support forum (I don`t have one of these myself to comment)

Seconded. The ASR-8400 is a fine router and a total steal at that price.

I'll second that - I got one a few weeks ago when they were reduced to
£30. It works fine. You just need to check out the tech support forums
to ensure you set it up securely (it's default is unsecure).

I was looking to get a Vigor 2600g but it wasn't going to be available
in time, so my intention was to get the cheapo one and wait for the
Vigor release. However, this thing just works (it's currently been up
for over 2 weeks - no reboots or issues that I'm aware of), and it
lets me do all I need to do by allowing selective ports through the
NAT. Unless something goes wrong with it, I don't think I'll be
replacing it.

Just been looking at this, and it looks promising! One of the reviews at
ebuyer mentioned problems running MSN messenger - Has anyone here
experienced this?

Any other good or bad things about this particular router I should consider?

Thanks everyone,
Dan

Dan,

MSN Messenger text facilities should work fine without doing anything.
To get voice/video to work, you need to map TCP & UDP ports 6901, to
get File Transfer, you need to map TCP ports 6891 to 6900 (depending
on how many connections you need), to get Remote Assistance, map TCP
port 3389.

Thirded, I bought one for home in July then another a month later for a
small cybercafe which connects seven PCs.

Version 4.2.3.0.0 is unofficially available & the updater I used just
did its stuff without issues. The FW remains outside the web interface
still but others have stated the FW rules have been updated & although
no new CLI manual is yet available, the 600 series manual is similar
enough.

Danyool, I've had the 510v4 router since January & it has performed
flawlessly, recently being connected for ~50 days, before that, 40,
before that 30 etc, etc. This router is good but Alcatel's support isn't
that attentive. The 510v4 doesn't have a serial port which some people
prefer - firmware upgrades are sent via the web interface instead. The
CLI uses telnet. I 2nd ADSL Guide as a good starting point.
