Can anyone explain connection paradox

Can anyone tell me how it is possible to have a network connection yet not
be able to use OE or IE. Most of the time my connection is fine but I get
the above phenomena occasionally, particularly when the connection is not
being used. I thought I would be able to have the router permanently on and
connect around the house when I want to.
If I switch the router off and on again the connection works normally again.
I often find that I cannot connect to the router setup screen when in this
condition, if I could I could restsrt the router from there.
My ISP is Kingston Communications and a sthey have a monopoly in this area
they are not rated very highly for performance. is it possible that
contention (i.e. too many connections on one node) is the cause. Perhaps
they disconnect me if there is no traffic?

I don't get the exact problem.... The router is your own router in your home
network? or the one from the provider giving you internet access?

Anyways; if the connection from your PC to the router fails, then I would
first check on a firmware upgrade for that router. Sounds like that one
crashes.
If the connection from the router to the internet fails, try to check for
settings to "keep alive", many routers/modems provide this functionality. If
this fails try using allways-on-network-software like MSN Messenger for
example, it stays connected and sends some data once in a while, this will
provide for a keep-alive as well.

Thanks for the tips. It didn't happen this Saturday which is usually the
worst night. I will play with some of your suggestions, many thanks for the
help.
The Router is a Netgear which is on the ISP approved list but is mine.

Are you using any torrent software at the same time.
Torrent software and some p2p programs will overload many cheaper routers
with connection attempts and they will crash - then needing to be restarted.

If you are, try setting your bit torrent client to use no more than 90
connections at a time. I know azureus allows you to do this. The router
crashing will explain why you cannot connect to its setup interface over the
network and has nothing to do with the ISP.
