Can Anyone Advise If AOL is a VPN rather than ...

Certainly they use their own proprietary software which would indicate this
but I need conclusive proof

AOL is a proprietory system but they also have their own internet
gateways and are a real ISP from then on. In fact they own big chunks of
the worldwide internet infrastructure.

Thanks for that. Would you happen to know if they use NAT (network address
translation)?

I am trying to set up a VPN on AOL Broadband and am told if this is the case
then it's a no-no

I don't think they do but they do run content filters on port 80. To get
any sort of VPN to work over AOl you will need to set the PC's MTU to 1400

I don't know about that, I know uu.net/worldcom provided all their
network infrastructure a couple of years ago.
