Can ADSL signal be disrupted by analog fax machine?

We are thinking of converting our fax line to carry ADSL but I have
heard that ADSL can be affected by some fax machines. Is this true? I
thought the splitter took care of seperation between analogue and
digital signals.

Many of our clients use their fax lines for ADSL with no problems. I've
heard the same as you, but never seen the problem for myself.

As long as the filter is of a decent build, then there shouldn't be any
problems.

While I have heard similar, I have never actually seen an example that could not
be explained by defective FAX equipment, defective filters, or outright
stupidity on the part of the user. ADSL on a a properly filtered line should not
be affected by any equipment on the filtered side of the line. Cheap filters
probably contribute here, so get good quality filters. You can also place
multiple filters in series (but make sure you take the ADSL signal from the one
nearest the exchange ;-)

A modern fax machine is just a scanner and printer on top of a cheap modem; our
main ADSL line is shared with an analogue modem without problems. I know of
over 1000 sites around the UK where an ADSL router is plugged into a line, and
the router has a modem strapped to it, also connected to the line, for remote
router configuration purposes.

I have no problem at all with mine. Always make sure you use a good quality
filter such as those sold by www.adslnation.com .

There were some postings here a few years ago which named specific fax
machines which were deemed incompatible with ADSL by the manufacturer
(for whatever reason). Have a search.

Yep - a client had one. Can't remember what the hell it was now but it
buggered ADSL right up. This was back in the days of engineer installs
(2001) and it certainly wasn't a filter issue. The machine splattered
conducted and emitted RF all over the MF band and you could pick it up
using a normal radio over 30 metres outside the building. Before
anyone asks - yes it was CE approved (or stamped as CE approved
anyway). The BT engineer took one look at the fax, said "Its that" and
then proceeded to do the radio test with a radio that had been lying
on a desk once he knew I was an electronics engineer.

Zen used to (maybe still do?) have a list of fax machines which have
been "proven" to have problems with ADSL. From what I remember they
were all pretty old and I wouldn't expect any problems with anything
made this millenium ;-)

I have seen a line which couldnt pick up faxes once broadband was installed,
strangely it was a BT model fax.... solution was to switch the BB to another
of the lines into the business.
