Be aware if you previously subscribed to BT's caller id, and have
signed up to BT Privacy, which provides "free caller ID", your caller
id will fail.

Fault in BT script apparently; very bright after a week of wasted calls
with Indian call centre who have never heard of BT Privacy option.

Useful tip from engineer was to check your line is activated [assuming
you have it] is to dial *234# and message will confirm, or otherwise.

If BT advised this at outset we'd all be a lot happier.

Don't you need to unsubscribe from Caller ID and then subscribe to BT
Privacy? Mine works perfectly, and that's what I did ...

But what does this have to do with broadband specifically?

FU's to uk.telecom

I went through this same process myself a few weeks back after seeing the
one poster saying it could be done (to save some money)

I've just dialled the *234# and I get the announcement that "callers
identities will be displayed" so it seems to be on for me, but then not sure
if BT have done their bit yet - I suppose my next bill will confirm it
either way!!!

Be courteous enough to either follow up to the set group, or acknowledge
your 'amendment'.

I was subscribed to Caller Display, and then on the 1st July switched to BT
Privacy, not had any problem at all.

Same here, my caller ID carride on working quiet happily. The only thing
that seemed to reset was BT Text (as in I got a phone call for an incoming
text rather than it appearing on the text unit), although that gets used so
infrequently that it might have been reset when I swapped Home Highway for
a normal line + ADSL six months ago.
