hi all,

i am a programmer, not a network admin

looking for an answer to a hopefully simple question

my uncle is a manager at a cabinet making shop with a small network.
they need to buy a new server. they are going to have 2003 server
standard edition. this is a single server shop. its primary use is to
house the companies database (file based) on a file share.

if they have 50 workstations in thier network do they need to buy a CAL
for each of these? i didn't think they would need CALS for using the
server for file sharing till i started reading microsofts site on
licensing, and quite honestly i couldn't find what i considered actual
answer up there. it seems that what i was thinking is more in line with
the terminal services licensing, which they wont need.

so the simple ? - do they need CALS for a file share server?

thanks,

steve

If your company's workstations are networked, you will utilize a network
server and the workstations on the network will access that server(s)
software to perform certain functions such as file and print sharing. In
order to legally access this server software, a client access license or CAL
may be required. A CAL is not a software product; rather it is a license
that gives a user the right to access the services of the server.

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/sam/lic_cal.mspx Click on SBS2003 and
you'll see that CALs are required for this product.
