OK, my cable-modem connection is running fine, but the ISP's primary
name server is down AGAIN. It may be time to run a cache-only server
on my linux firewall. Is there something simpler than BIND?

What's wrong with BIND ?? It takes maybe 30 minutes to learn the basics and
then it's fire and forget.
If you're using an RH derivative distro you may well find a BIND "Cacheing
Only" RPM on your CDs, install, run, forget.

Yes. You can run djbdns. See: http://cr.yp.to/djbdns.html

Running bind as a caching-only nameserver is dead-easy. There's even a
"caching-nameserver" package you can install to set up the scripts you
need.
