What is the proper type of cable to use when connecting a server to a
switch?

We are using HP servers, connecting them to a 3COM 4500 switch, can i
use stright through cables or do i need to use a crossover cable?

Thanks in advance

I use 568B myself as it seems to be the most common

but the switch should handle either (auto switch)

The 3COM 4500 has auto-sensing (MDI/MDIX) ports that can connect to a
server using either type of cable. However, standard practice is to
connect a server to a switch using a straight cable.
