Fist, you should already know the name or IP number of your mail
server, which I assume is provided by the cable company's ISP.
On your XP or w2k machine, next Tuesday (or whatever)
do
pathping <the addr of your mail server>
This command takes about 5 minutes to complete. Save the text
that this test produces.
On Wednesday morning start a ping -n 999999 <address of your mail server>
Do this in some way such that you can save the text when
it craps out.
As soon as your connection craps out do the pathping as shoen
above. Save the text.
Compare the pathping text the before and after tests. Depending on
what the diffs are you need to do different things. If the connection
is lost right at your router (pathping will show this) then post the
test results here and we can take a look.
You can now call tech support and say "I can't read my email."
This puts the ball in their court since it's their server
and network. Play dumb about your tests for a while but at some
point you can offer you email them your test results.
Before doing all this make sure the date/time settings
on your PC so that you can compare timestamps with other people.
