hi all,
check this out
traceroute 67.x.23.x
traceroute to 67.x.23.x (67.x.23.x), 30 hops max, 38 byte packets
1 10.58.144.1 (10.58.144.1) 116.916 ms 9.574 ms 9.950 ms
2 172.30.157.81 (172.30.157.81) 8.736 ms 9.904 ms 21.044 ms
3 172.30.157.110 (172.30.157.110) 23.168 ms 21.863 ms 18.916 ms
4 172.30.156.122 (172.30.156.122) 8.839 ms 9.816 ms 8.583 ms
5 172.30.158.115 (172.30.158.115) 8.848 ms 10.400 ms 9.389 ms
6 68.42.244.186 (68.42.244.186) 58.223 ms 10.224 ms 10.377 ms
7 gsr01.pntiac01.mi.comcast.net (68.42.244.170) 12.706 ms 21.482
ms 19.037
ms
etc...
first, traceroute skips two hops. my router (which i'm NATed behind)
and my router's default gateway (which it got by dhcp from comcast.
68.42.x.x),
these two should show up (at least my home network's router - the one
NATing)?!
also, why am i not seeing any 68.42 hops until the 6th one? i should
be on that subnet? instead i'm getting both the 10.58.. and the
172.30.. which are private addresses?
thanks for your help,
-Aaron

Presumably that's what your ISP is using internally in their network.

There's no reason, why the cable company shouldn't use the private addresses
within their network. Those addresses are just as good as any other,
provided they don't try to use them across the public internet.

thanks for replying.
how can i know if it's actually comcast (my ISP) or another user
redirecting traffic through his private network? (i called my ISP they
obviously didnt answer me)
also, traceroute skips these first two routes
(me)192.168.1.2 --> (my router, default gw)192.168.1.1 --> (ISP
default gw) 68.42.x.1
it goes exactly to 10.58 etc (as i posted last time).
is that normal?
thanks again for your time,
Aaron

No idea. If a user can divert traffic like that, your ISP has big
security problems. So one would hope not.
