Cable Modem & X10

I'm considering going with a cable modem, and am pretty paranoid about
leaving my cluster online full-time. Wouldn't a good security measure be
to use an X10 controller to power down the cable modem when there is no
net activity? Similar to a PPP link hanging up the modem on a dial-up?

I've searched the net for people doing this, and haven't found anything.

Am I being stupid?

Mike

It would be nicer to the hardware (and the DHCP server) to use a
low-voltage switch to disconnect the ethernet connection, rather than the
power connection. Have to make sure the switch is clean up to 10MHz.

You're not paranoid if they really are out to get you. Why not just use a
script to down the interface. You should be able to get inetd to recognize
activity and run a script to bring the interface back up.

Or just control the power to a cheap 10 Mb hub.

Or maybe just use a firewall box.

Why not just use a cron job to ifconfig eth0 up and down, as
appropriate?
