hi

my mate is building a annexe to his house for his parents and wants to share
his broadband connection with them from his router. bearing in mind that the
cable will be buried what cable should he use? and what protection will they
need? the annexe is about 20 metres away and will probably need 30 metres of
cable.
thanks in advance mick

A network cable from a computer shop! Simple as that unless he goes
wireless. use whatever it takes to protect the cable.

Why not tell your mate to come to the group and ask himself?

how about ordinary network cable, inside say, a garden hose and sealed
at each end to keep the damp off it?

That doesn't address the potential problem of different earth potentials
at each end, which could cause problems for anything connected to it.
Fibre would be the proper solution.

If the remote building is powered from the same supply as the main house and
the mains cable is earthed, won't the earth in the remote building be the
same as in the main house? Why should a 20 yard cable run between buildings
be any worse than a 20 yard cable run within the main house?

Is fibre the best answer? How would the cost of the fibre itself, plus the
Ethernet-to-fibre converters at each end, compare with some form of optical
isolation box at one end - a device with two Ethernet ports but no
electrical connection (only an optical "connection") between them?

I don't know the terminology but I would be tempted to run the cable
through some sort of pipe for protection, and make sure to run a couple
of drawstrings for future cabling.

Or just get a wireless router?
