cable/ADSL broadband: questions about kit needed.

Can anyone offer guidance to a beginner?

I want to extend my broadband connection to a second computer via
wireless networking.

I currently have a cable connection with ntl, but will be moving soon
and very possibly switching to ADSL.

ntl provide information about pagages from Actiontec and Linksys which
seem to do what I want. It seems I need a router and a wireless
network adapter (costing about £49, £36 respectively excl VAT). I have
a few questions:

1) How does this work? Does the router replace my existing modem or
plug into it? Can I connect one computer directly to the router (via a
ASB cable, say) without needing a network adapter? Or is the network
adapter used to connect the first computer, in which case I presume
I'd have to buy extra kit to connect the second?

2) How much of the kit will need to be replaced if I switch from cable
to ADSL? I'm guessing that I'd need a new router at least, but will
the rest of the kit work with a new router? If so, how much choice of
manufacturer/model would I be likely to have?

3) If I can find the same hardware cheaper elsewhere, will I be able
to set it up without the software supplied with the ntl-sanctioned
bundles?

Many thanks in anticipation for any help you can provide.

Brian.

I've just undertaken something very similar with ethe same
requirements that I was on NTL currently but wanted to switch to ADSL,
however I'd like to be able to move back to NTL if needed in future.
Only differences are I was only connecting PC's wirelessly with no
wired connection but *hopefully* that part shouldn't be too difficult
and also for my ADSL connection I had a ADSL router already with modem
taken care of.

My NTL connection cam via set top box, I plugged the ethernet cable
from STB to my new Linksys Broadband router(BEFW11S4), using
configuration tool with it within about 5 minutes I was able to
connect via router to the internet, setting up wireless
adaptor(Linksys WUSB11) was also just as easy. In total my equipment
was £88 incl. VAT + Del from www.cable-warehouse.co.uk, can highly
recommend them. As for network adaptor stuff I'm guessing on first PC
you can just wire into the PC using an ethernet cable from one of the
ports on the router fairly easily. If you don't have network adaptor
you could but a USB converter for ethernet cable or just buy 2 USB
adaptors (1 for each PC)?

This is the bit that may differ as I say I already had router/modem
for the ADSL connection. I just had to reconfigure the router to not
be a gateway and just be an access point, this was slightly more
difficult (more due to lack of knowledge and stupidity than anything
else).

I don't see why not, the connection never really came into it when
setting mine up, it seemed peferctly happy going through the new
stuff.

I guess if you are looking at switching to ADSL you will just need to
make sure you get an ADSL modem gaeway router, I've no experience on
these myself but i assume you can switch of the Modem functionality
like you can configure the gateway/router options if you ever return
to NTL and don't require to use the modem anymore.

Hope this helps, as I say I'm a novice myself in these matters but
*fingers crossed* everything seems to be working fine so I'm happy
enough with setup.

My router and wireless network card arrived today. Set them up, no
sweat and now have internet access on two computers. Marvellous!

Thanks for your encouraging message!

Cheers

great news, glad it all worked out. 2 weeks on and it's still all up
and running so I'm happy. Another useful thing I found was the
backup/restore utility on the routers to take a copy of the configs
when you have them up and running. Was useful for when i swicthed
between my two connections to practice other day. Now I can get rid of
my NTL connection for time being and rely on ADSL but if I ever switch
back I can just restore the NTL settings settings. (Or more likely if
I ever 'accidentally' break my settings whilst playing around!)
