So I have multiple XP Pros call it XP-BOX1 and XP-SMALLBOX. They both
have my account "First LastName" with same passwords. And both sides
have this account as admin.

Before I go any further, this didn't use to be a problem until I had
to clean install XP-BOX1.

OK... XP-SMALLBOX has sharing enabled that is the security ok at OS
level. I am not explicitly sharing C drive entirely (that would be
dumb).

XP-BOX1 doesnt have sharing enabled but thats ok I am trying to mount
\\XP-SMALLBOX\C$ on XP-BOX1. I do click on use "different user" and
give "XP-SMALLBOX\First LastName" and password.

When I attempt to mount the drive in above manner I get first
challenge for password for "XP-SMALLBOX\First LastName" - thats fine
may be the OS forgets things. Then it will turn around and ask for
password for "XP-SMALLBOX\Guest" (grayed out). I dont have guest
account enabled. I even tried IP addresses also created accounts
names with no spaces but same problem.

What is going on? By default having the two accounts with same name
and pwds on both boxes should have taken care of things not to mention
I make that redundant by "use different user" option, plus I have
password for other servers set with same values for the said account.

Any insights woudl be nice.

Thanks,

AS.

Hi,

open and edit your local policy on your computers (Start -> Run ->
gpedit.msc and click OK).

Under Computer Configuration drill down to Windows Configuration -> Security
Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options.

Here look for Network Access: Sharing and security model for local accounts.
Double click on this policy and set the policy to "Clasic - local users
authenticate as themselves"

I hope this helps,

Mike

Incredible. Thanks. I had no clue about this policy editor. Much appreciated.

Amyn.
