Buying CAT 5 cable over the counter

It's such a simple question that I'm amazed it hasn't been asked here
before... but according to Google it hasn't so here goes:

Does anywhere sell CAT 5 cable over the counter? Ideally by the metre
off the drum (like the DIY sheds do for every other kind of cable -
surely they'd sell more CAT 5 than bell wire these days?!) but I'd
settle for packs of sensible lengths like 5m or 10m.

Failing which - any recommendations for mail order?

Thanks,

Steve Adams

Maplin do solid core for £0.39/metre, or a 300m reel for £50

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?...CW45Y&DOY=18m4

Microdirect will do a 300m reel for £46, so in this instance Maplin's
price isn't a rip-off.

Note that solid core is better for IDC connectors (yes, I know it's a
tautology) and should be used for permanent wiring, but stranded is
more flexible, and should be used for patch cables. There are
different RJ45 plugs for stranded and solid core.

www.yell.com look up electrical installers in your area. You may have to
adjust the search terms a little bit. That's what I did when I needed
50metres. Cost 20p per metre including ends.

Yes, here. You could probably get the length you need too.

B & Q as well I think (but don't quote me, it's been a while since I was
there).

Go to www.tlc-direct.co.uk and find your local store.
Much cheaper then Maplins too.

Martin

[surprised look]

We have one locally, but I don't need any CAT 5. They do have a website.

When I was doing some work on TV leads, I found Homebase was good for
connectors, but Maplin was cheaper for cable. None of the retail
warehouse operations matched the local radio shop in Kirton Lindsey for
cable prices.

A lot of this sort of thing soon loses any price advantages if you get
different parts from different places.
