But is it a crossover cable?

I'm trying to network two Win 98 computers. Both hardware and software
installation report themselves as working under windows but there is no
communication between the machines. Running "net diag" in an MSDOS
window reports a problem with cards, cable or "configuration".

Since I only ever intend to network two computers I ordered a crossover
cable and it duly arrived in a packet saying "crossover cable". However
on looking at it and remembering my RS232 days, I believe it may be a
straight-through patch cable.

Looking at the plugs from the metal connector side (i.e. NOT the side
with the plastic clip thingy) and towards the cable the colours of the
wires (from left to right) are: brown, green, blue and orange on BOTH plugs.

1. Shouldn't there be a difference on a crossover cable?

2. If so can anybody tell me which pair should be crossed over so that I
can open up the cable and resolder two of the wires?
