Business Broadband: Advice required

Hi Guys,

My local exchange is to be upgraded on the 7th of January - at last. Now
comes the time for comparing deals etc.

I have been looking into getting a business broadband connection due to the
fact that there is only a 20:1 contention ratio, compared to the 50:1 most
companies have for home users.

Another reason, is that my wife will also be accessing the broadband
connection through a wireless adsl router box which I will be purchasing in
a couple of weeks. Our house is being CAT5 cabled, however she wants her
laptop to be movable, whilst she also sits on the chair watching Eastenders.
I know about the security problems, and am experimenting with some of our
wireless kit in school.

Therefore, what I want advice on is simple - do you know of any companies
that are offering business broadband with a free adsl router (for now, until
I purchase the wirelessone). Also, what is your experience of business adsl
connections - are they worth the money, or should I simply plump for the
home user setup with the greater contention ratio. I will be using
newsgroups, and I will be downloading files. I also need to use my own SMTP
server which came with my domain name and is held externally (I think this
is called relaying?)

Your advice is appreciated,

Many thanks

Gareth

I've had Pipex home office service for some 20 months and frankly have never
noticed any adverse effects of the 50:1 contention ratio. Even use it to
setup and test web servers that are eventually located at Telehouse and
during performance testing the download speed never drops below 56KBps so
I'm quite pleased with it.

Cheers mate. I signed up for a Broadband service from Force9.net today. I
didn't go for the business option in the end. Instead I went for the one
with a free modem and free activation. I can upgrade to a wireless
router/switch at a later date.

After asking some people on another forum, they said that the 50:1 was okay
for two users to share a connection. I am also taking into account where I
live. I very much doubt my area will have a large takeup of users - majority
of old age people is high here.

Thanks for your answer.

Gareth
