Direct debit ? - tell the bank to refund all monies taked in error. You
might want to take along copies of your letters cancelling the service
as evidence of these sums being taken without authorisation. The bank
will likely wriggle and say it's not their problem - refer them to the
direct debit guarantee, and if they still squirm, ask to (a) speak to a
manager, and (b) a copy of their dispute resolution process.

You can get a copy of your credit details as held by Experian etc. for
£2 - it might be worth doing this, and you will also be able to file a
notice of correction if you find anything wrong.

You may also be able to push for compensation for defamation of
character if an entry has been made that has adversely affected your
credit rating, but it would be worth taking advice on this over at
uk.legal

Direct debit ? - tell the bank to refund all monies taked in error. You
might want to take along copies of your letters cancelling the service
as evidence of these sums being taken without authorisation. The bank
will likely wriggle and say it's not their problem - refer them to the
direct debit guarantee, and if they still squirm, ask to (a) speak to a

Read more about what the Direct Debit Guarantee Scheme is for! All you ever
seem to do in groups is look at questions, have a quick search and then post
what you find without appearing to have any real knowledge. The direct
debit guarantee scheme doesn't cover any dispute between a person and a
company. It is only in place to cover for example when a bill states £50
and a different amount of say £70 is taken from the account. The £20 would
be refunded.
If a direct debit is cancelled at the end of a contract by writing to the
bank then it is the fault of the bank if they pay anything out. The direct
debit no longer exists once cancelled so they wouldn't be able to pay out.
A letter to a company cancelling a contract is not the same as a letter from
a customer to a bank requesting a direct debit is stopped. As for your
legal knowledge, do you know how much it costs to sue a company? Or the
tactics companies use to drag a case out and ensure the person runs out of
money! Most members of the public can not afford to sue over certain things
as they are not covered by what you will know as "legal aid" (now renamed).
Compensation scrounging is not recommended in such a trivial case.
You need to ask yourself if the original message was genuine. A solicitor
and maybe the bank will ask why the person has just let payments go out for
a year without saying or doing anything.

There is often far more to a story than people post, once you learn to read
between the lines it will give you an idea of what else to copy from Google
searches and post to a number of newsgroups.

I suspect that Colin may be a little 'intellectually challenged'.

Graham,
that may be your suspicion but he's actually right.

If these withdrawals are shown to be unauthorised then the customer will be
entitled to a full and immediate refund from her/his bank or building
society. If the bank refuses then the Financial Ombudsman is the next port
of call.

If the OP contacts Citizens Advice Bureau they will give him that assurance.

Thanks Phil - for the sake of saving bandwidth in a flamewar I withdrew
from the thread to leave him to his own beliefs.
