Building an Intranet

I'm thinking about setting up a small intranet for our company of 25
employees. I don't know the easiest way to do this.

Is it better to create
something with IIS, a 3rd party wiki or something else?

I don't plan to put any money into it (besides time). It's more of an
experiment, not sure if anyone would use it, but something where everyone
would need to some type of authenetication to log on to and could make
additions, notes, etc.

Would like any ideas of what would be the easiest to do, doesn't have to be
fancy or high tech, etc.

Do you have Windows Server 2003? If so, I'd suggest you try SharePoint. It's
free (WSS, not the SharePoint Portal Server), fairly easy to install and
manage, and fairly easy to use.

Take a look at http://www.microsoft.com/sharepoint (remember, you want
Windows SharePoint Services, NOT SharePoint Portal Server).

Have fun!

Yes, we have Windows server 2003.

I always thought share point was a subscription service, unless I'm thinking
of something else.

Any ideas of how much disk space a small site would take up?

This is probably a dumb question, but is it possible to work on something
like that at home on a system running server 2003 or does all the work need
to be done on the server itself on location in the network.

Sure, you can work on it at home -- and I highly recommend you do so. If you
like what you create, you can later create a backup of the data at home and
restore it to your company system.

Windows SharePoint Services is a free optional add-on for Windows Server
2003. Just go to the Microsoft site, download it, and install it (follow the
directions carefully, and verify the pre-requisites). There are plenty of
newsgroups and web sites with FAQs, tutorials, and other useful information.
Start here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/win...t/default.mspx

Have fun!
