I recently upgraded a handfull of gateways running 2.4.20 to 2.4.25 to
get security fixes.

The most heavily loaded of them has shown some sort of instability by
becoming unreachable by SSH or HTTP etc.

Also, I see spikes in CPU usage with no obvious reason, reaching usually
3-5 but in some cases as high as 17-18. There is no coherence between
e.g. cron and the spikes.
Cron does however generate spikes when housekeeping in the early
morning. This behaviour is also new.

Usually the load is ~0.02, but it also higher in average after the
upgrade, which is the only thing I've done to the boxen.

The case is simple NAT, some basic firewalling, bundling in some cases etc.

NICs/drivers are Intel EE Pro 100 S (desktop edition) driven by e100,
DLink DFE570 and 580 driven by tulip and sundance.

Is there a "new feature" that has been introduced after 2.4.20? What
could be the cause?
