Buffalo G54 Wireless Router with Windows Messenger 4.7 problem....

Hi, I just tried to use Windows Messenger 4.7 (actual version# is
4.7.2009) to "talk" (voice chat) with my friend, but failed. The error
message kept saying that it can not be connected. Both me and my
friend has Buffalo wireless router (WBR-G54) to share the ADSL with
our families, and when the "can't connect" error message happened,
both side has some other computers sharing with the ADSL broadband. My
questions are:

1. I remember last time the voice chat worked fine with me and my
friend -- when both side has only ONE person connected to the Internet
and no one else was sharing it. Could this be the reason that caused
the "voice chat" problem this time?? The text instant messaging works
fine though...

2. For Windows Messenger 4.7 (come with XP), from what I read from
this newsgroup, it seems that it is still very different from the "MSN
Messenger 6.0"... say for example, when doing "file transfer" although
the Buffalo wireless router (WBR-G54) does support "nPNP", but the
"Windows" messenger can not do file transfer behind this router while
the MSN messenger could... So, should both of us (me and my friend)
install the MSN messenger?? I don't want to do that unless really
necessary as I didn't really like MSN messenger as it has TOO MANY
banner ad...

Any suggestion or comments? Thanks!

Yes - sounds like NAT is the problem

The Buffalo wireless router may support UPnP(which gets around NAT) but
Windows Messenger 4.7 doesn't.

If you don't want to install MSN6 you can install Windows Messenger 5
which has been recently released
(http://www.microsoft.com/windows/messenger/) and supports UPnP as well

However, be aware that Microsoft have removed the Hotmail integration
with Windows Messenger 5 (if thats important to you)

You would both need to upgrade - though one of you could use MSN6 and
the other Windows Messenger 5 if desired.

Regards
Sunil

Did you realise that you have one of the best manufacturer supported
products on the market.

Call Buffalo

Thanks!
By the way, what is NAT?? (sorry I'm a newbie here),

I just installed WIndows Messenger and asked my friend to do so too.
However, she was running a Chinese version of Windows XP, which she
couldn't find the latest "Chinese version" of WIndows Messenger 5 from
MS's web site... however she installed the English version of Win
Messenger 5 on her Chinese WinXP, which seems to work fine.

After we both upgraded to Win Messenger 5 and made sure that both side
do not have any other computer to share our ADSL broadband, we tried
again to do video conference using Windows Messenger 5, but still
failed. We also tried just the "voice chat" feature, also failed. I
remember that we were able to do at least voice chat just few days ago
(before I got my Web cam), so this is really kinda weird.

BTW, what is the major differences between Windows Messenger 5.0
(5.0.0381 to be exact) and the MSN6 messenger? And why would Microsoft
remove the Hotmail integration with Windows Messenger 5?? Just
curious..

THanks!

NAT stands for Network Address Translation.

Most ISP's give each user 1 public IP address, however there is a
network behind it - NAT kicks in

http://computer.howstuffworks.com/nat.htm

While this works fine for most things, some break while using this..

Hmm - not really sure what to suggest you could try asking in
news:microsoft.public.windowsxp.messenger and/or
news:microsoft.public.msn.messenger

You have rerun the audio/video tuning wizard...

MSN and Windows Messenger used to be made my the same team inside
Microsoft.

They are made by different teams and Microsoft are now trying to target
Windows Messenger to corporate customers/internal company use (where
Hotmail integration is not important) and MSN for the general public so
that also now includes options like playing games online etc..

Sunil
