I had bt install ADSL November 2001, I was wondering, who owns the
hardware?, are the filters mine?, what about the modem?, I ask this as I am
thinking of moving elsewhere, and hope bt don't want to come over to my
house and rip up floor boards etc.

Thanks for any help in this matter.

Eddy

If it was fitted by a BT person then I'm afraid that the kit still
belongs to them....

But don't be dismayed as they may visit to collect the modem but very
seldom do they bother to collect anything else (filters or extension
kit) & all you have to do is not let them in the house whilst they
wait for the modem & they won't be any the wiser anyway...

Hi,
I was on the engineer install, and I moved to wires only earlier this
year. A few days after the move, I recieved a labelled and postage paid
plastic bag from BT. I had to put the modem in the bag, and take it to a
post office. They gave me a reciept for it, and that was the last I heard.
No mention ws ever made of removing the filter built into the faceplate,
they only wanted the modem back. I doubt that they'd bother chasing you for
it though if you forgot to send it.

I had the free engineer install 3 yrs ago, cancelled last
March, and the modem is still here, awaiting collection ;-)
I think they assume the cost of collection outweighs the
cost of the modem.

Just out of interest Martin did you migrate to the BT Openworld wires only
package from the engineer install?

If you did, did you have to take out a new 12 month contract?

Jus wondering because I am considering moving from the Engineer install to
wires only.

Cheers

Hi Phil,
In January, I migrated from BTO to AAISP (and would never go back to BTO
as I had a series of problems culminating in them closing port 25 and
therefore blocking my mailserver without notice). This was still on the
engineer install. About 5 months ago, A&A were running a trial of the
regrade from the engineer install U500 to wires only, so I got on the trial
and regraded to the wires only product. A&A have a monthly contract, so
that was not an issue.

As I understand it, BTO still have a 12 month contract, so I suspect they
would tie you in for another 12 months. Maybe you would be better migrating
to a cheaper ISP that offers a monthly contract and regrading at the same
time.

Why are you planning to migrate from BTO's engineer install to their wires
only service? (if its possible)

The monthly prices (and service) for both are the same...

Sunil

Because most of the other ADSL providers don't let you migrate if you have
an engineer install. If I migrated to BTO wires-only and I wasn't tied into
another 12 month contract I could start looking around for a new provider if
my service de-graded in anyway under the new BT Yahoo platform.

Aren't fitments & fixtures to a house deemed to be part of the property?
(As I found out to my cost in my first student digs...)
