bt yahoo broadband line failure

i live on a new housing estate (18 mo old) and my neighbour across the
road has broadband access. i am a bt operworld anytime user on
dialup, and recently registered for bt yahoo broadband. my exchange
is 'broadband' enabled, but according to bt my phone line has failed
the relevant tests and i cannot receive the service.

i phoned them to enquire as to how my neighbour has been sucessful to
be told that his line routing may be different to mine, and i should
try to register again in a couple of months.

i attempted to register for freeserve's broadband service about 10
mins ago and was taken as far as the payment screens. do freeserve
carry out the same tests and am i likely to receive a similar email re
line failure in a few days?

i don't want to waste my time registering with a new isp if it is
going to be a pointless exercise...

any advice appreciated.....

All line tests are carried out by BT Wholesale who pass the results on to
the ISP who has asked for that line to be enabled.

It is sometimes worth trying with a smaller ISP - even if you fail again -
as they may be willing to give you more details on why you failed (exact
line test results etc.)

Am sure someone here will suggest a suitable ISP.

Sunil

IMHO and based on my experiences with BTOpenworld (who appear to have
attempted to distance themselves from that farcical outfit by renaming
themselves BTYahoo), you ain't missing much by not being able to subscribe
to them.

I used to get faster connection speeds with my 56k AOL dialup than I did
with my "always on" (not!) BTOpenworld connection.

Douthers,

Why not try again with BT, I failed 2 line tests in the previous 15 months.
Since the 24th September. BT are now selling the extended reach product, I
applied 24.09 and was activated 03/10. I have no problems with speed of BT
Yahoo Broadband, and it is personal taste whether the BTY bundle suits you
or not. Give bT another try, and see if you pass lines test.

Hi,
One possibility is that BT never performed the test. When you apply for
broadband, BT will consult their existing records about your line to decide
if it is suitable. Sometimes these records can be wrong, due to some
operator mis-typing the data or similar. As Sunil says, try a smaller ISP
such as A&A, Zen, Nildram or Plusnet. When you do, telephone them rather
than trying an online order, explain the situation and ask them to submit a
manual order.

All this means is that the ISP will hassle BT to perform the line check even
if their database shows that your line is too far from the exchange. There
is no garentee that this route will work, but it's worth trying, and costs
nothing if you fail the test.
