BT yahoo and XP SP2 - browser update?

Hi folks

Someone on another forum (Tiscali) has just posted that they have just
received an e-mail from BT Yahoo saying that, in the near future, they
will be sent an .exe file that they MUST install.

Apparantly he contacted BT and got a reply (in bad (Indian?)English!)
saying that there was a problem with XP SP2 that stopped the BT Yahoo
browser (sic) working unless this patch was applied.

Does anyone know what on earth all this is about?

Does BT Yahoo use special browser? Surely not. It mustr work with
standard IE.

Is it perhaps that SP2 re-sets IE's preferences to MS home page rather
than BT and perhaps re-sets the 'working' icon to MS rather than BT.

It is obviously a genuine e-mail as the "helpdesk" seemed to know about it.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like rubbish to me. Personally, I hate ISPs that insist that I
install their software...everything one needs is in the OS (Windows
and Linux).

There are a whole series of problem cropping up on net accessing
programmes under SP2. Yahoo and Yahoo Messenger are amongst them

BT Yahoo "offer" (it is optional) their customers a *very heavily*
customised version of IE which includes all the Yahoo add-on's (and
ZoneAlarm as well I think)

Obviously it includes something in that needs to be updated before XP SP2 is
installed on a machine

If you choose not to use their version, BT Yahoo works fine with the
standard IE as well..

Not they wont be sent an exe file. It will be automatically updated
when logging into the btyahoo portal using that browser.

They have a special version, with "added" extras such as parental
controls - but the browser does not need to be used in general.

All,

A lot of discussion has been generated by the recent notification about the
upcoming patch for the BT Yahoo! Browser. I have been chasing up details of
what this patch specifically is and what it entails. I have finally got this
information for you.

Firstly, please be assured that you will not be sent an email with the patch
to install, the process is automatic - this is easy for un to implement, as
in order to use the BT Yahoo! Browser you need to sign in, and hence go
through another layer of authentication that allows a check of what version
of the Browser you are using.

The patch contains a fix to a minor problem that occurs during the
uninstallation of the BT Yahoo! Browser, which removes both the BT Yahoo!
Browser and the Internet Connection Manager (ICM) menu items. This patch
amends the uninstall script to ensure that the ICM Start Menu items are not
removed.

Additionally, the patch also contains fixes for Microsoft Service Pack 2
issues, which are safe for non-XP customers, which is why we are issuing the
patch to all our customers. Specifically:

- Parental Controls Fix
If a user installs Service Pack 2 with YPC activated, all Internet traffic
will be blocked. Users will see the standard block page displayed by YPC.
The problem will also exist if the user activates YPC and then installs SP2.
(Note: if the user has full access to the Internet and YPC is running the
user will not be affected). The problem appears to be that an LSP that's
installed under the DNS management Service (svchost.exe) can't successfully
make a COM call to an out of process server. In earlier versions Yahoo!
would set this Out of proc. server to run as 'Interactive User' (by using
EXE or setting it during Install), but this doesn't appear to work on SP2.
Once the Patch has been applied, YPC will continue to work properly. The
Internet will no longer be blocked by YPC, and normal functionality (rights
and restrictions) as set by the Master account will be in place.

- ActiveX Blocking Fix
YinstHelper is a control used for our download and install process. If a
user does not have YinstHelper, the Yahoo! pages that typically prompt a
user to install it, do not display in SP2. Instead a toolbar displays in IE
that the user has to click (or right click) to install it. This is a
documented change Microsoft is making for security improvements. In the
Yahoo! Browser, the users will not see the toolbar automatically. The user
will be stuck in a loop where they are prompted to install, but cannot do
so, if the ActiveX object does not have object tag.

Once the patch has been applied, the download and install will continue to
work as before with no warning to the user.

- Message Warning for Sidebar loading
When the IE Sidebar is loaded, IE displays a warning message at the top of
the Explorer bar area. While the local page, (Loading status page) is
loading the error will display. Once the we begin displaying the data being
retrieved the page is switched with a non-local page causing the error to go
away.

Once the patch has been applied the security message in sidebar for Internet
Explorer will no longer display and the sidebar will function normally.

- Messenger Application Blocking
Currently, on first launch of Messenger, once the application attempts to
hit the Internet a Microsoft Security Alert Message will be displayed.

Once the patch has been applied, this message will not display when BT
Yahoo! Messenger is launched, messenger will be 'Blessed' by the XP
Firewall.

Translated: Our software engineers are hacks, that have never read MSDN
programming guidlines, and therefore the software we produced does not
work with Microsoft's latest service, even though our hacks did used to
work...

I like how they blame XPSP2, when the reality, is that it's highly
likely it is down to rule bending that the program previous got away with...

XP SP2 is known to cause all sorts of grief with Zone Alarm.
