Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice.

I am setting up my parents' new PC, which came preinstalled with
Windows Vista. I went on to the BT Broadband website in order to get a
driver for their USB modem, only to find that there isn't one for
Vista.

Is there a cheap alternative USB modem that they could get? The BT
website shows this modem:

http://www.shop.bt.com/invt/car113

Although it is a router and an Ethernet connection will presumably be
faster than one over USB, it is rather expensive and they will have no
use for the wireless features. I also wonder whether it will be easy
for them to set up, as I will only be here for a few days to help
them.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

RB

Oh - and just to make clear the current modem is a "BT Voyager
Classic" - http://www.voyager.bt.com/usb_modems...oduct_info.htm

buy an ADSL Modem/router, and use the ethernet connexion from the pc, far
less hassle and less onerous on the cpu. Plus if the routern has a built-in
firewall, and most do, it's an extra layer of protection.

any combined ADSL modem/router suitable for G.dmt ADSL will do. The BT
Voyager 205 is cheap on Ebay etc. Netgear 834 or various Zyxel models
retail.

depends on what you want to spend ;-) Linksys get good reviews, as do
Netgears, but I've heard good stories about cheaper ones too. Belkin's don't
seem to get good reviews, check out adslguide.org's equipment reviews. Just
ensure it is a ADSL Modem/Router, and NOT a DSL/Cable router. The latter
works on cable broadband.

This one from Dabs has a good review and is half the price of the BT one.
