Hi a colleague of mine has a Dell XP Home pc which has been working fine
with his BT USB modem.

However for some reason he reinstalled the software and every time the
pc boots with the modem connect to the usb it crashes with a 0x0000009
error. It boots fine with the modem disconnected.

For some reason add/remove would not remove the software but I found and
uninstall in the program files bt folder and it uninstalled.

To be on the safe side I also trawled through the registry for any
references to BT broadband etc

Once the PC was "clean" reinstalled the software and the problem is
exactly the same ....

Any ideas before it gets a Dell factory restore?

Does the modem work if he reboots with the modem disconnected, and then
plugs it in when powered up ?

Has he added any more USB devices recently ? (ie. could power drain be
the problem here)

if you are about to do a factory reset then try unistalling all the usb
entries in control - system - hardware and then re booting without anything
attached to the usb ports.

let windows find the usb ports etc and then try the modem.

I had something similar last year with a usb device and this cured it
(although I did subsequently do a full reinstall to correct other problems).
