Just a short update for those who engaged in debate with me on the BT Suck
post.

I complained to BT and threatened to go to Oftel. A few days later BT
contacted me to tell me that they have moved me onto an exclusive line as
there *was* clearly quality issues with my line. I have since noticed that
voice calls are much clearer and internet much faster.....however and this
is the best bit......they said the new line was much closer to the exchange,
infact my old line was 7.2km, good news my new line is 6.1km...LOL......BT
Broadband say "still too long"!!!!

Ah well at least I am happy that I was right to begin with! I'll need to
wait Bt say they should be trialling a further reach of 750m after
Christmas.

Just out of curiosity anyone got enabled with 6.1km distance?

Cheers
Decal

Is this the line checker that says that the line length is "too long" or has
it been tested for ADSL? If it's the former then you should put in a new
order anyway. If you're on a new line then you never know...

Cheers.

It may be a idea to try applying via a different ISP and/or asking for a
"manual order" to be placed given that BT have rewired your line.

As your telephone number hasn't changed they could be giving your old test
result back instead of testing it again.

Sunil

Well listen to this and I need advice. My neighbour has BT broadband
and I have been told I cannot get it. We are both identical distances
from the exchange and we live in terraced houses. BT will not even
come to check my line, my neighbour got it because he converted from
ISDN back to analogue and the engineer did a test. I have told BT
this and they refuse to come and test the line they want me to pay
£125 to get it tested.

Can anyone give me some advice, this is craziness at its worst.

YES BT SUCK BIG TIME!

Speak to a manager, and call there bluff if your 100% sure by saying that if
it fails, you will get the bill, and if it passes they will, and install you
free.

You will need to take that gambe.... Or go to http://adslguide.org.uk
you'll get good advice there.

Cheers
Bhoona.

P.S. Have you got cable in your area? NTL or Telewest?

Ignore Bhoona - threatening BT doesn¹t work. And if you want to have a
special test done on your line why object to the cost ? It costs BT money to
do "one-off"s so its not actually unreasonable. Your neighbour pays/paid a
higher line rental then paid £50 for the conversion and test so its not
unreasonable.

Simply order a new line making sure its clearly specific ed to be for ADSL.

They put it in, and test it for ADSL - bingo. Then cancel your original
line.

If it can't take ADSL then tell them to take it out as its not what you
asked for - this is an approach that many have tried and succeeded with.

Just threatening or pleading with Bt will rarely get you anywhere - who
listens to one in 40 million saying "just make an exception for me " ?

And you'll find out if successful what the loss actually is - you may not be
getting it for another reason altogether - your line could be DACS'd in
which case, ordering a second line is the only answer.

There is a slight risk that you will come unstuck trying this. To be
enforceable you'd really need to get BT to acknowledge the condition in
writing and they are unlikely to do so.

However with a slight variation Graham's suggestion can be made watertight.

Order a second line, make sure that they note it is specifically for ADSL
_and_ (here's the extra bit) that you will be ordering BT Broadband.

Once the line is installed go ahead and order BT Broadband.

If the line fails you can now phone BT and tell them that you want to cancel
it with immediate effect and you'd like your installation fee back. If they
refuse point them at note i in Section 1. Part 29. Sub Part 1.5 of the BT
price list where it says

(i) if, following line test it is discovered that BT Broadband Service
cannot be provided,

BT will allow the Customer to terminate the PSTN service without
paying the relevant cancellation charges, and refund any activation
charges paid. However, BT will bill for any use of the telephony
service in the interim.

You might need to explain it a couple of times - BT customer service operators
aren't always that clued up on the finer points of their price list.

I've tried it both ways (once when my exchange was originally enabled and
recently after the max line loss was increased to 60dB) and had the
installation of the line refunded both times. It was easier going down the BT
Broadband route - I had to spend quite a bit of time on the phone the first
time before I got the refund.

OK, you _do_ need to suffer BT Broadband for 12 months but it's probably worth
it if you know the line's likely to fail.

Its not necessary to order BT Broadband - the same rules apply to ADSL from
any ISP.

As long as BT has made a note that the new line is specifically for ADSL on
the original order.

Basically order the line and then ring back 30 minutes later to confirm the
original operator added the correct note..

Sunil

wow, thanks for all the advice. I do understand it costs BT money to
send someone out but common sense should provail. I will order the
2nd line and state it is for Broadband, hopefully if it doesn't work
I'll get the refund. BT are very poor at customer service though and
I have put a complaint into Oftel about there attitude in this matter.

Thanks again to everyone who took the time to reply.
