BT has today announced plans to reduce the cost of its charges to rival
companies for access to the telcos loop. Prices are set to fall by as
much as 70%, but this figure will only be achieved by significant volume
discounting the telco operates for some of its larger rivals.

LLU has nothing to do with what AOL charge you.

Mind, you're an AOL user so I can understand how you got confused! :-)

LLU ?

Anyway = bah !

Then again - if they want to remain competitive...

After all - I only pay £20 a month at the moment after phoning up to
cancel my dialup AOL account, and told them I was switching to Pipex
ADSL. I told them Pipex were cheaper than AOL's £28 a month. After a
pause, the operator told me I "qualified for a special rate" of £20 a
month.

They were lying to keep my custom, but God Bless 'em, anyway.

At the moment, 1 mbit is around £35, but that should drop when the
price of 512k drops. Then maybe I can justify the expense...

AOL are also known as Arseholes On Line.

AOL is the biggest pile of crap on earth. For heavens sake get a proper ISP.
It's unlikely to affect AOL's prices until they feel the pressure of other
companies reducing their prices. It's called being greedy.

BTW I have 1mb for 27.50 a month. Fantastic service and no sh**e AOL
software on my machine. Bet you can't say that can u.

Mind telling us how LLU works what it does etc etc and which ISP's may be
affected?!

This anything to do with the datastream IP stream thing?

I'm not a telecoms expert (more of a computer systems person), although
I did once sell BT some software!

Local Loop Unbundling is where the local loop (the bit between you and
the exchange) is rented from a third party (it is 'unbundled' from BT
control although they still maintain it). You might or might not get a
better price. AIUI it does not affect ADSL.

The Datastream/IPstream bit is the 'other' side of the exchange and a
separate issue.

No doubt plenty of people will be along in a minute to correct/augment
my rather sloppy definition....!

Simply, LLU is when ISP's rent space from BT in their exchanges and install
their own DSL equipment there.

This allows them to sell their own "specialist" DSL services and not just
resell the products that BT Wholesale offer nationally.

ISP's which are currently involved in LLU:

Easynet currently have 138 exchange like this around the UK
Homechoice have around 80 LLU exchanges (all in london) on which they offer
Video On Demand Services
Bulldog have 35 LLU exchanges - all in Central London (the ones which offer
400K upload)
http://www.node4.co.uk/ also have some around Derby.

The "hope" is that the above ISP's will expand their services to other
exchanges and other ISP's (like Freeserve) may start LLU'ing some exchnages
as well.

> This anything to do with the datastream IP stream thing?

LLU is different from DataStream and IPStream - the key difference between
all 3 is how much involement BT have in the process.

Regards
Sunil
