my brother wants to use sky for his tv ,telephone calls and broadband.Hes
currently with BT on bt together option 2.He rang sky to see about the
package that he wants and an operator informed him that he must change to
BT option 1 first. Is that a normal procedure ?..as it sounds rather
strange to me.

Is he tied to a 18 month contract? If so HE will STILL be billed for the
Broadband.

I think you will find that, if you use another call provider on a BT rented
line, Option 1 works out at the best value. I suspect that the operator
was giving advice rather than instructions.

The Sky phone offering, is a calls package only using carrier
pre-selection (calls automatically go via Sky). Line rental remains
with BT as do the extra services (caller display, 1571 etc).

The best option is reduce BT down to Option 1 as this gives you line
rental for £11 if paid by Direct Debit, £10.75 if you also opt for
paperless billing.

As line rental is via BT you can if you wish use BT for some calls, dial
1280 and the call will go over BT, this is handy if you have the free
caller display service from BT (www.bt.com/btprivacy) as it requires you
to make 2 calls per month via BT (6 calls per quarter if quarterly
billed). Some calls also maybe cheaper over BT than Sky Also as line
rental is with BT and only calls automatically go via Sky you could sign
up to call 18185 and make cheaper calls to international numbers and UK
mobiles.

If he is using Sky for calls then BT Option 2 is no use to him. Option 2
is the evenings and weekends deal from BT for free geographic calls.

So if he is routing his calls through Sky then he will be paying for a
service he won't be using. Shifting down to Option 1 is the lowest cost
alternative for BT packages available at the moment (excluding certain
inapplicable light user deals).
