Hi group,

For all those looking at trigger levels and willing them to go up,
take a look at this announcement from BT:

http://www.bt.com/btnews/Btn_DtlNews...1693&newsIdx=1

(If the link does'nt work look at the news section on the BT homepage)

However the release says:-

"BT today declared that 100 per cent broadband coverage of every UK
community is achievable by 2005 if industry and government pull
together. This would put the UK in a position to lead the world."

and later on:-

"Ben added that when all these exchanges are enabled, more than 99 per
cent of UK homes and businesses will be connected to broadband
exchanges."

This 1% are what, too far from the exchange under any circumstances?

OK this is a 'cautious' statement, but it does indicate an attitude change
at BT. The cost of the exchange side equipment is beginning to fall making
this goal more likely. The remaining 1% are very small local exchanges and
like you point out, long lines. But this is a step in the right direction.

lol .. I know this news is big .. there's 3 copies now in this group.

Sunil posted it first, and then I didnt check before I posted
(although granted, a link to the uk-bug site rather an an indie site).
Next, you post it.

Wonder how many copies we'll get in this group over the next few days?

Perhaps it's beginning to dawn on them that there is considerable demand for
internet services better than what can be provided with an analogue modem,
and that if they provided such a service, they would have many more potential
customers. Perhaps they also realise that if they don't provide these
services, then the cable companies will. It's good news whatever the reason.

Rod.

Hmm.
With only 1%, it might be reasonable for BT (given appropriate
legaslative help) to supply broadband satellite to those that can't
get wires.

Of course, BT aren't expecting to get pay-back just from home, teleworker
and public sector SOHO schemes involving single and multi-user PC
installations for Internet or remote office applications; they have some
tricks up their sleeves for using ADSL as the carrier to deliver other
services. Such services require maximal coverage of ADSL and is key to the
future success of BT - in fact, ADSL is a vehicle to enable these services.
But that's another story ;-)

It appears we are looking at two different problems that need to be solved.

First - connecting 100% of exchanges. Maybe BT are proposing to get over the
backhaul problem by sticking a satellite dish on a tiny exchange on a far
flung Scottish Island.

Secondly - if we have 100% of exchanges - what about those a long way down
an aluminium wire? Maybe slower ADSL or a hybrid ISDN connection?
