BT Say "No ADSL" - do I believe them ?

Tried to order ADSl - got told I was too far from the exchange.

Except that next door has it, and these are identical houses, part of a
large-ish development built at the same time, so I find it difficult to
believe that there is any significant diffference in cable route between
me and next door.

Also did an online check on a friend's number further down the road, and
they came up as "OK for 512KB"

So I'm suspicision - it's not unknown for BT to have bum data.

How do I get a real test - BT Sales and BT Broadband just refer to the
conputer and say "no, can't be done" - but there must be some part of BT
somewhere who can really test my line.

thanks for any pointers.

Go to plusnet, nildram, zen or someone like that and ask them to do a manual
order.

Though do remember that it isn't actually the line distance that is
important. The important thing is the signal loss and noise on the
line. While this is related to distance you could have two lines that
take the physical path but one is a crappy line and therefore fails.

First (although it's a separate issue) BT Broadband isn't very good
value (other issues about customer service and quality of service
aside).

In fact, you have now experienced a CS issue. Go to one of the 'better'
ISPs, and they will be willing to get BT to make a manual check.

Interestingly enough, for me anyway, I live in a semi. I have
broadband; across the road has broadband; the non-adjoining house to
us almost certainly has broadband and yet next door, our 'other half',
was told that they could not have it!

All our lines come from the same telegraph pole straight outside our
adjoining half!

I suggested that they check into it further....

regards, Nick

Your phone line may be routed over a different cable to your neighbour.
ADSL won't work over aluminium wires. You may need to request that your line
be re-routed over copper. There is no logical reason why you can't have ADSL
if your neighbour is connected. Which ISP do they use?

In some localities, if there is no option for providing voice service,
except on DACS, then the "last in the street" to ask for ADSL may be
unable to have it installed, without major work by BT, or waiting
for some other property to cancel rental on a line.

I kept my HH and have 2 lines with ADSL in use - as one consequence,
adding a DACS isn't likely on these lines :-) Peter M.

I had exactly the same problem. I have been trying to get Broadband for
over a year now. BT originally said we were fed by fibre, therefore we could
not have ADSL. This was put into their Database and every subsequent
application returned this info. Last week, some local contractors cut
through the BT cable supplying our street (as well as several others), we
were without a landline for 4 days. During this time I managed to speak to
a BT engineer, who came out to repair the cable, he said we were fed by
copper! He also said he had enabled ADSL for other houses in our Street!

We went back to Eclipse and told them this and the fact he said to speak to
a senior rep at BT; We got an e-mail yesterday, being activated on Thursday!

Obviously I am waiting to ensure it does happen, but it seems that BT are a
little too quick to write off lines as unsuitable and do not re-check/update
their database that often!

Persistance does pay off.

Paul

Broadband at last

My story -

apply for bb two years ago, failed the line test, managed to get the
line loss and distance from visiting engineer; 5.62km from exchange
and line loss of 58.9db - well past the 5.5km and 55db limit then.
Waitied until the extended range of 6km and 60db was introduce then
reapplied. No joy from BT. No even a move from RED to AMBER. Recording
to their records still too far from exchange. So contacted
BTWholesales with measurements, look into it as I should by right be
in AMBER. Still waiting for their reply. Meanwhile did research about
the street. Contacted BTYahoo BB, nice chap gave me each and every
house number its Broadband possibility. Interesting readin as all
telephones using my number such as 482, 482, 478 wouldn't get it but
some of the houses (like next door!!)with a different number such as
756, 735 would get BB (subject to additional tests) so ordered a new
line (£74) and made sure that I would have a new number with the
numbers featured. Engineer came and gave me a distance measurment of
5.61km, 100 metres shorter. Apply for Broadband and . . . . got it
turned on last Wednesday!!!! Speed? average 460/230 crazy uh!
My story says that BTWholesale's computer is not always right!
