Hi,

I'm looking at the broadband satellite option from BT, has anyone used this
service ?

Any ideas why on the 500/1 service the connection can't be shared between
multiple computers ? (for up to 4 PCs, you need 500/4 which of course costs
more money).

Also, the BT website states "VPN not recommended" basically due to satellite
latency issues. Anyone actually running a VPN over a satellite connection ?
Does it work ?

Thanks.

I had the BT Satellite 500/1 service for about 18 months prior to broadband
coming. It is better than dialup as it is always on but upload speed at
times are only just faster.

To make speeds anything like on the 500/1 service the computer has to run
acceleration software and so BT say you can't network it. However the way to
do it is as follows. Use a PC running Windows XP or 2000 (The acceleration
software will not work under Linux) Install two network cards. Connect one
to the Satellite Modem and the other to a network hub. Set up Internet
connection sharing on this gateway PC and you can share the internet
connection by connecting other PCs to the hub.

Don't forget BT have a rather meagre limit on the downloads on their
satellite service!

I have no experience of VPN - however things like games such as Unreal
Torment were impossible.

Thanks.

Now just the question of whether VPN (Virtual Private Network, e.g.
connecting to work network) works or not. From other things I've read, it
does, but will run slow, equivelant of 64k, which in the absence of ADSL,
would still make it the cheaper option for extensive Internet access
compared to ISDN or Midband.
