BT are removing my DACS - can the engineer perform broadand line test prior to exchange upgrade

Morning all

BT have agreed to remove my DACS tomorrow via an engineer visit (on the
basis that my internet connection is never >24kbps). Our exchange will be
upgraded shortly but BT say they cannot perform a definitive broadband line
test prior to this date - is this something I could ask the engineer to do
(as a favour - assuming he is equipped). Also, can anybody tell me what the
criteria is at present for passing the line test (i've seen various posts
about gain, attenuatiion etc etc but nothing definitive)

TIA

Ask the engineer to test the level of noise on the line, atm if it is less
than 60db then your line will be ok for broadband. There are plans for
increasing that level, but that is how it stands atm

& just what can the engineer use to test the noise level (or have they
rolled out some new magic test gear everywhere else in the country but not
in the midlands).

The correect answer is that even if the engineer is ADSL trained there is
little they will be able to do in the way of testing for ADSL (until the
exchange is activated). They may be able to give you a line length result
but that's about it..

By the way the 60db refers to the line loss on the ADSL signal, not noise
level,

They can't do this test with handheld equipment alone.
It needs equipment at the exchange end too.

Thanks for explaining what the measurement concerns, for Beck :-)

Apologies to Beck - my age is getting to me ... if it's any defence,
the post in question wasn't on my news server then !! Peter M.

Are portable modems (single channel) to go on the exchange end available?

If the engineer has a Hawk tester it is quite easy to do a db measurement, a
remote unit is placed in the exchange and with the main unit connected at
the customers premises a reading can be obtained, even if the engineer has
the kit, they will probably not be willing to do the test unless 1.They can
be bothered 2.The exchange is nearby(probably not, I reckon your quite
far!!!) 3. Most likely they will not as this is not what they have come to
do(May not be ADSL trained either)......But it is possible to do and
this includes exchanges that have not been enabled. HTH .

Only problem is that BT is over 2 years behind in the roll out of the Hawk
tester (as they cost to much) & when they are actually being released to the
field the actual training on how to use them is very minimal, to say the
least......
