Hi all,

New here so sorry if this has been asked before - I have checked through the
group for old messages about it.

I've just helped a friend order Pipex Lite 1MB ADSL, the BT line check says
the line is long but should support up to 1MB. However Pipex have just
cancelled the order saying BT are refusing to provide adsl on the line.

Is there anything that can be done to get BT to improve the line? It is
within a mile or Oxford City Centre but probably takes quite a circuitous
route, perhaps over rivers, from the exchange.

I'm rather annoyed as I've already ordered an ADSL router for the
connection. We could use NTL and get a cable modem instead but after severl
years of awful customer service with them myself I'm rather reluctant to
recommend this!

Tony

Go to another ISP who will place a manual order. Plusnet will do this and no
doubt others.

this doesn't make too much sense. Look at www.bt.com/broadband and
report back here with the *full text* of the number check response.

Pipex have a habit of using 2M lines to supply 1M circuits but have
people that are too thick to realise that if they order 2M on a 1M
capable line the order will be refused by BT. Pipex screwed up. Walk
away and try somebody more useful.

For Telephone Number 01865xxxxxx on Exchange OXFORD
Your exchange has ADSL broadband.
Our initial test on your line indicates that you may be able to have an ADSL
broadband service that provides 1Mbps, 512Kbps or 256Kbps download speed.
However due to the length of your line the 1Mbps service may require an
engineer visit who will, where possible, supply the broadband service.
If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to confirm
if your line is suitable for the speed of service you wish to purchase.
Thank you for your interest.

That makes sense. My own pipex account is 1MB but the router shows the ADSL
connection at 2MB.

We've decided to order 512K from virgin as it won't tie us into a year
contract if the service is crap. The phone line is overhead and I suspect
is rather old.

Many thanks,

Tony

Without knowing the reasons behind BT's refusal to provide the service which
you've ordered, it's difficult to make any comment on what might be done.
I'm not sure whether there's any legal obligation on BT to provide ADSL in
the same way as there is for a PSTN service, but I'm sure I'll be corrected
if I'm wrong...

That's just luck of the draw. We had five hours of downtime on NTL recently.

Last I knew was that BT incorporated a clause into their customer
charter stating that their PSTN lines would support up to 14,400 bps
data connection.

Worth remembering that Virgin now charge a fee (effectively an activation
fee) if you leave within 12 months - like Pipex..
