BT today confirmed that it is to launch a new, faster ADSL broadband service
to its wholesale customers from November 20. The new service - BT IPStream
Home 1000 - will meet the needs of residential consumers wanting greater
bandwidth than the standard 512kbt/s available at present.

The wholesale connection charge for this self-install product will be £50,
and the monthly wholesale rental will be £23; for existing customers
upgrading from BT IPStream Home 500 products there will be a regrade charge
of £35 in place of the connection charge.

Bruce Stanford, director of products, BT Wholesale Markets, said: "We began
trials of the new, faster 1Mbit/s service on October 6, and it became
immediately apparent that there is strong consumer demand for it. We've had
more than 4,000 orders in less than three weeks from more than 50 ISPs,
which is well ahead of expectations and has helped us move swiftly to a full
launch."

All ISP's will be able to offer it.

I presume BT Broadband will make an official announcement in due course...

However, I actually believe BT Broadband are currently "publically"
trialling it and you can call 0800 800 060 to get details of the trial.

In what way ? I'm on BTB and it's solid as a rock here. I was
thinking of trying to upgrade to 1Mbps if I can. I think I'm probably too
far from the exchange though.

But I wonder how long before they quietly alter the t&c and change it to a
100:1 contention ratio ?

Personally 512kbt/s at 20:1 as I originally sign up to would be more than
fast enough but with 50:1 it is now slow as dial up at peak times.

As soon as I am in a position work wise where can risk the distruption to
service that migration might cause goodbye BT and eeven more importantly
goodbye Yahoo.

They aren't taking anyone else on for the trial though.

ISP's can't really do this (well not easily) with IPStream products as the
20 or 50:1 contention ratio's are fixed by BT Wholesale not the individual
ISP's

If you signed up to a 20:1 product you would still be on it...

There was a page on the UK Bug web site (I think) which stated that the
migration to BT Yahoo for BT Openworld customers was more or less
voluntary - all the old email addresses etc still work and its not necessary
to use their "own" browser or homepage if you don't want too..

Really ?

I've never heard of anyone at all having broadband and the rates being at
least 7 or 8 times faster than dial up - even at peak times.

Are you sure its not your destination that¹s congested rather than your
connection ?

Haven't been around BT for long have you ? Broadband 500 was originally
advertised as 20:1 to the T&C were changed without users consent to 50:1
then afterwards a 20:1 product was introduced. I have been lucky the 50:1
contention ratio has only started to really bite on my hg recently and it
shows at peak times
