We are considering using BT Midband for a client who is outside
ADSL range, even after the latest extension.

Could somebody who is a Midband customer do me a big favour and
run a traceroute for me just to check what the latency will be
like if we go ahead.

I would like a tracert to 81.187.255.126 please.

Also, can you get a static IP? Are any ports blocked or proxied?
Can you use BT's SMTP server to send using a FROM: address other
than the one BT provide? Any other comments?

TIA

I (and a couple of clients) have cancelled Highway - I'd think it
worth asking in freeserve.help.isdn, uk.net.providers, and/or
alt.internet.providers.uk along with a check of the ISDN forum
on <http://www.adslguide.org/> If you don't get any answer, why
not try it and see - it is only a tenner after all, and you can
cancel the same month if you don't keep with it!

AFAICR from a time when I did try it out, summer 2003, there were
no blocked ports, no proxies, but *no static IP*. I already had
use of other services (port 2525 on Claranet's 9.99/year mail
and news got me around Freeserve's port 25 'grab it all' rules)

From a router one had to choose just one of a number of phone
numbers they used, while on the USB facility, their dialler will
try the ten (?) numbers in sequence to find one to answer. Peter

I used to have Midband before I could get ADSL. Latency was as
reasonable as you could expect for 64/128k ISDN, I never really had
any issues with it. I can't remember where it connected into BT's
network, but I do recall that there was no significant latency
increase between there and their borders. Try a trace route from
81.187.255.126 to www.bt.com. Note the round trip time to the BT
border, then add what you'd expect from 64k or 128k ISDN plus a couple
of milliseconds on top, and you'll not be far off.

I used to run VPN and terminal server sessions without any problems.

However, you don't get any access to SMTP servers, I had to run my own
mail server, which was rather hit and miss sometimes as some ISPs
(most notably AOL) would deny connections from dial-up IP blocks. As
for Usenet access - forget it.

No static IP.

I don't recall any ports being blocked, but that was over a year ago.
Things may have changed.

HTH

Jake

With midband you can't use BT's smtp or pop servers *AT ALL* they don't
give you any email facilities, in or out ... you need a separate
provider for that!
