BT to launch "BT Text"

I should really have included both groups when I posted to uk.t but..

BT Text enables fixed line customers to be able to send and receive SMS
(text) messages to and from other suitably equipped fixed lines and most UK
mobile networks from 13/04/2004

To be able to send SMS (text) messages, customers must rent eligible
business or residential fixed lines from BT, have a compatible telephone and
subscribe to the Caller Display service.

It seems to be priced quite competitively - it costs:

10 pence/text
8 pence/text on BT Together Packages
6.4 pence to BT "Friends and Family" numbers

The relevance to uk.telecom.broadband is that this seems to be a gentle
introduction to some of the services that BT Communicator (BT's tie up with
Yahoo Messenger) will offer.

Depends how, and when, and which network you call

Calling O2 at the weekend is only 2p per min, calling at peak through a 0871
callthrough would be 10p per min.

The recieve looks quite cool, it already seems to work with 3 phones.

And if you don't have a compatible DECT phone or call-id, the TTS system is
rather fun!
