Hi i was wondering if anyone could tell me if I can set up the adsl modem
that
came with the bt openworld pack through a wireless router, at present the
modem plugs into the microfilter with a tiny phone plug and it plugs into
the pc with a usb cable, I was wondering if it would just be as simple as
getting a usb to rj45 converter and plugging the modem into the router, and
if it isn't that simple is there a way of doing it ? I have 2 computers and
would like to be able to have them both connecting to the internet.

Thanks in advance.

Ben.

Hi Ben,

not sure if you can use the usb modem, however the best way would be to get
a combined modem+router box. D-Link to a 4-port switch + router and I
believe it is called the DSL-504 (£119, the last time I looked, but possibly
cheaper through ebay).

Cheers,

Mike

You might like to think about going the extra mile and getting a Netgear
DG824M as I did. Though you'll need an Ethernet card (£10), it's simple
to set up - almost plug-and-play. Reading some of the problems here that
many folk have, I'm very glad I took the KISS solution (though it cost
me a little more). And at the second PC I'd recommend the Linksys WUSB11
that's USB and has a real aerial to give you good range. Though I
started with a PCMIA (in my laptop) I very soon changed to the WUSB11
which installed and ran <snaps fingers> jusslikethat :-)

From my desktop in an upstairs office at the front of my house, I can
use my laptop at the end of my back garden 60 yards away - and I never
get drop-outs (of either ADSL or of WiFi). My logs confirm that BTW.

Thanks guys, there is no way of connecting the Alcatel Speedtouch modem that
BT send to a router, but I am gonna buy a d-link adsl modem and d-link
wireless router and do it from there i have already read info from someone
who has done the exact same thing, BT obviously don't tell you its possible
to do this, they say you have to pay £70 a month for a business connection
if you want to connect multiple computers, damn you BT, so hopefully all
will go well, you have both helped me look into different things, thanks
again.

Don't worry, BT will also tell you that their 2Mbps service is good for
20 users, I threw 40 users at them so they said I'd need 2.

Also bear in mind that BT's advertising says that they are the company
that will help you run your company 24 hours a day. So try calling
their business sales department after 6pm to discuss how...

Make of that what you will.

David.
