He does mention that he can get a connection (presumably on the Virgin
account) using a Samsung modem.
Tests to try:
- nslookup news.bbc.co.uk
- browse to
http://212.58.226.53 (IP address of news.bbc.co.uk)
- ipconfig /all, then ping aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd where aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd is the DNS
address quoted by ipconfig
- does a POP/SMTP client (eg Outlook Express) work: is it all TCP traffic
that fails or is it confined to web browsing?
If the ping command works, it might be worth running ping -t news.bbc.co.uk
and/or ping -t 212.58.226.53 for a few minutes to check whether packets are
being lost or delayed. Terminate the ping -t by pressing Ctrl-C and look for
the value of Lost.
