BT Internet (ADSL) and BT Voyager 2000 Wireless Router Combo OK?

Hi

Just a quick question to clarify a situation I have

Bought a used BT Voyager 2000 from eBay for a mate on Virgin and it connects
but will not allow web pages to be viewed.

But it works OK on a Pipex account. So I guess this is due to the fact that
the Voyager has a fixed MTU of 1500 - Virgin specify 1450 as a max MTU.

Now another friend has asked me to set up a wireless network, but she is on
BT Internet . So I am thinking I can use the Voyager for here rather that
writeoff the cost.

So is anyone here using a BT Voyager 2000 on BT Internet ADSL without max
MTU problems.

Cheers

DeeBee

That's unusual on two counts - that Virgin specify a MTU of 1450 and that it
doesn't work regardless. IOW, I suspect your guess is wrong.

Thanks Alex

Virgin definately specified an MTU of much less than 1500. Just checked my
notes and it was 1458.

I can get a connection using a Samsung modem no problem, but using the same
setting the Voyager reports a connection but cannot connect to google bbc
virgon.net etc etc

I can only see that this is an MTU issue as BT told me the Voyager has a
fixed MTU of 1500, inless you can tell me different. I can only base my view
on what I get told and practical experience.

FWIW, I've been on ADSL for a few years and have never had any need to
adjust MTU sizes from the default settings.

Have you tried pinging anything by IP address? For instance
www.bbc.co.uk is 212.58.224.85

It may just be that your DNS resolution is not working.

Just had a look at their web-site
http://www.virgin.net/customers/broa...ation/routers/
There is no mention of MTU and they are still saying they do not provide
technical assistance for routers so you must have caught them on a good
day to get someone to talk to you.
Stupid question Have you done a "Reset" and started from scratch? I
would also check for f/ware upgrade in case of bugs
http://www.voyager.bt.com/2000/downloads.htm
A friend used to have a BT Voyager 2000 on BT Broadband and had no
problems are an initial hiccup. When on dial-up he used a freebie program
to alter the MTU setting in XP (default is 1500) to 576 and after
installing broadband on some web pages he was getting timeouts so he had
to change the XP setting back to something more workable (somewhere
between 1480 and 1500 but can't remember).

I guess I must have caught them on a good day, but then again there was also
a BT line fault so I think threatening them with leaving if they did not
sort things out did help.

Router has been hard reset and has the latest firmware on it. It connects to
Virgin as reported by the router but cannot open any web pages. Works
perfectly with Pipex on anoth line.

Does the BT2000 not have a diagnostics/troubleshooting option. Does this
give no clues or info that may help. Is it ALL passes?

You mention testing the router on another line but haven't confirmed that
you can use the virgin account with another router or modem even.

Is the modem set to automatic DNS. Might be worth sticking it on manual and
putting in the pipex or other DNS.

Simple suggestions but they may trigger a thought.

He does mention that he can get a connection (presumably on the Virgin
account) using a Samsung modem.

Tests to try:

- nslookup news.bbc.co.uk

- browse to http://212.58.226.53 (IP address of news.bbc.co.uk)

- ipconfig /all, then ping aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd where aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd is the DNS
address quoted by ipconfig

- does a POP/SMTP client (eg Outlook Express) work: is it all TCP traffic
that fails or is it confined to web browsing?

If the ping command works, it might be worth running ping -t news.bbc.co.uk
and/or ping -t 212.58.226.53 for a few minutes to check whether packets are
being lost or delayed. Terminate the ping -t by pressing Ctrl-C and look for
the value of Lost.

Having just looked at the manual another silly question for you.
Have you enabled the firewall to medium or higher? If so you have
blocked incoming HTTP ,DNS,and several others.Try switching to low or
disable.
