BT Home Hub is reverting to WEP encryption when powered off

A customer has a brand new Home Hub and asked me to set it up.

I found that it was set to WEP encryption, so I changed to WPA-PSK and
pressed Apply. This change took effect and the PC then saw a WPA network.

But as soon as I turned the router off and back on, I found that it had
reset itself to WEP. This happened three times so it wasn't just a fluke.

Is there something additional that's needed to make the router remember its
status and not reset the encryption?

A quick googling reveals a similar command prompt to my Speedtouch
585v6. After changing to WPA, try telnetting to the router, logging in,
and running the command "saveall". If it doesn't give an error, it might
work. Then power off/on.

Blimey - that's obscure! I'd never have thought to try that. I'll give it a
go when I next see the customer.

Mortimer,

Is there anything in the log file?

I've not tried WPA with recent firmware releases but I recall that when I
did:
a) it would not communicate after re-starting my laptop from a standby
closedown (whether manually or idle timeout triggered). It needed a full
laptop closedown/restart OR a reboot of the router to kick it into life. Of
course, this could just have been a Netgear wireless card issue.
b) Whilst rebooting the router it started initially in WEP anyway - then
switched to WPA.

I formed the impression that the router firmware is quite non standard (ie
'improved' by BT ) and not well tested except at factory default
configuration. Anything else was very buggy indeed.

Phil
