Does anybody know if the following BT number charges per minute: 0844
0902270?

This is connected on my Dads PC at 2.2mbps through an ADSL modem, and
we're supposed to be on the flat-rate unlimited usage plan. We don't
want to find out we're paying per minute for broadband.

PC was reformatted, and this seems to be the only one it allows him to
connect to.

Go back & start again, if you are connected by an ADSL modem you will
not have dialed any number & quite possibly the number showing is the
support number of the ISP you have chosen. The number in an ADSL DUN
is more a weakness of the Windows system than anything else as it
requires some number to be input.

If you are that worried then change that number to 0,38....

If your broadband is like mine, that's your emergency dialup number in
case your DSL line goes down. Mine is free to call.

In principle, if you are only using a broadband system (i.e. not using
the PC as a FAX system as well) ALWAYS disconnect any phone cable from
the analogue modem in the PC to the wall socket.
Then you will never 'drop back' to a dial-up without noticing (except
for slow download speeds) and run up a huge bill.

As Kraftee says above, you will get the dial-up conncting screen if you
are using a USB ADSL modem. This is because Windows has to use the old
fashioned 'dial-up' system to talk to a USB modem.

The 0,38 that he mentions is just a dummy number to get the devices
'talking' to each other.

Actually it's an old tweak which some of the older USB drivers
required to make them work properly, it doesn't do any harm to put it
in nowadays anyway. I could reminiss about putting 999 in to prove to
a enduser it doesn't dial any number but I won't. Anyway if the OP is
that worried then they can just put their own number in simple as
that...

This is what we know about the number you entered (08440902270).

ICSTIS does not regulate this type of number. However we can tell you the
following.
a.. This is classified as a Internet Services metered access up to and
including 5ppm for BT customers number.
b.. It is provided by BT.

Which, as said before doesn't mean a jot as the number isn't used, it
is only there because Windows requires a number. You can put any
number there & it doesn't make any difference.

One thing though, many ISPs place their support number there, but all
it then is, is a aide de memoire to help users remember what the
support number is...

http://ukphoneinfo.com/cgi-bin-Phone...&Submit=Submit
reports it as being on the g4 charge rate (in category of up to 5p/min)

http://www.magsys.co.uk/telecom/codelook.asp
Code: 0844 0902
Type: Service
Use: Internet Services Metered up to 5p
Operator: British Telecom
Tariff Band: Internet 3.95/1.5/1p (i14) (inc VAT)
Service: Service

BT Price List at http://www.serviceview.bt.com/list/public/homepage.htm
section 2, Part 12 shows it is i14, so it looks like the ukphoneinfo.com
site is out of date for this particular number...
