BT Fusion question

Set up BT Fusion yesterday. This uses a BT router made by 2Wire model
number BT2700HGV.

Mobile phones supplied with this work on Vodafone network as normal. They
can connect to the WiFi network when close to the router - needs the
appropriate WEP security set up to work with the default configuration of
the router, thus when in range the phone gets an IP address from the router.
When making a voice call from the mobile phone this normally uses the
Vodafone network. But when near the router the phone uses the internet
connection provided by the router. It switches between the two just as if
it were switching between cells.

Question - does this actually require anything specific to the BT router?
Or could I use any wireless router?

The publicity material also says that the mobile phones will attach to a BT
Openzone WiFi network - so presumably all the phone is looking for is a
connection that will carry IP traffic - so perhaps this shows that any
wireless router would be sufficient.

Can anybody confirm this?

I suppose the question I would ask is why would you want to, the 2wire
is a good router. As you set yours up recently then I assume it is one
of the newer HG2700s, these have two wireless networks, one named
2wire*** which is 64bit wep secured for connecting your PCs etc to the
network and the other which is called BT-Fusion*** or something
similar which is WPA-PSK secured and your phone logs onto. I don't see
why setting up another non BT wireless router with the same security
settings and SSID shouldn't work for the Fusion handset.

No, because I don't have one... but earlier versions of Fusion used
bluetooth to connect via the HG2700 (bluetooth access points plugged
into one of the ethernet socket on it) so I shouldn't think you should
have any problems if you set the SSID and security the same. Try it
and see...

This one produced just one wireless network with SSID = 2WIRE095.
The same WEP key (found printed on the label on the underside of the router)
worked for both phones provided, and they get IP addresses in the same
subnet as the PCs.

I accept that the BT27000HGV is an acceptable router, but if I wanted to set
up a VPN I would prefer to use a Vigor.

Currently this is an acedemic question, but a colleague is getting Fusion in
the near future and will probably require a VPN also.

Ah OK, your HG2700 must be running slightly older firmware then. BT
will eventually send it a newer firmware and then you should see the
multiple SSID wireless networking, but if it works like you have it now
then I can see no reason at all why it shouldn't work with a Draytek
set up the same way.
