I got a letter from BT saying that I had exceeded my bandwidth, 8Gb over the
20Gb monthly limit, and that there would be no charge this time, but next
time there would be a charge per Gb that I am over. I never had a letter
like this before, OK, there have been times when I have exceeded the limit
before, and other times when I have not used my full allowance. I thought
that these fair usage policies took into account high and low usage as an
average? Anyway, If I go on to BT Home Option 3, I can apparently, go hog
wild with downloads, plus get a telephone that gives me cheap over the
internet calls, and this is only £2 more than what I pay at the moment. My
home network runs off a netgear DG384GT, and there are wired and wireless
connections to it. I like the idea of cheap calls over the net, but have
read that the BT Home hub is shite, is there any other telephone I can use
with the DG384GT? I am not on a contract at the minute, so am free to go to
any provider that I want, so is there any other ISP that can offer the
telephone calls, unlimited downloads (ok, still fair usage policy I
suspect), what I would like is an offer similar to the BT Total Broadband
option 3, that is compatible with my netgear stuff. I really want to avoid
the home hub. I like gaming, so an ISP that favours that would be a bonus.
Any advice you could give me would be great, thanks very much.

I don't really know why people have a problem with the HomeHub - mine
has been running fine what must be around 2 years now.

I know 3 people on BT usin the 'home hub'
What's the problem with it?
They just plugged it all in, and got online, no problems since.

Is it the wireless side of it that's the problem?

We never had a problem with ours in its use or setting it up etc but
due to the fact that it is big and ugly in comparison with the likes
of Linksys ours went back in the box it came in and we bought a
Linksys modem router .

No, its because its a volume product. So someone will know someone with one
which went wrong.

Consider a local garage mechanic who says "I get tons of Fords in here, but
never a Porsche. Porsche's must be really reliable.".

Ignore the twats
Im on option 3
No you cant use any other modem to get BT Talk other than the Homehub
or the Voyager 2500
I had the home hub when I signed up with BT in July and it is shite,
the speed is appalling and the wireless range is pathetic.
I complained to BT and after a few phonecalls they agreed to send me a
Voyager 2500 FREE !!
It arrived and was working within minutes. The wireless range is far
superior to the Homehub and it also works fine on BT Talk.
You can get hold of Voyagers on Ebay too if you cant wrangle one out
of BT

There are major disparities in reliability amongst different routers. The
dg834g is one of the top selling routers, but failure is rare, the Belkin
series cant be to far behind in sales, with a failure rate easily in double
figures within three months, and double that within twelve months.

Assuming that when your router was working you went massive with thee
downloads, did you in fact not realise you were doing so?

Or put it another way: How do you know you were the only one(s) using
your wireless connection?
