dear all,

having searched around fruitlessly for some advice on the web, i would
like to ask if anyone knows anything about getting solaris 10 online
with an existing bt broadband connection.

i joined up when i just had a pc, but purchased a workstation a couple
of months ago with a mind to learn how to program. that's all going
pretty well, but bt told me i could not get online with the
workstation.

however, i have also been informed that you can in fact get online with
bt if you know how to configure the system yourself. unfortunately, i
absolutely do not know how to carry out said task, and am looking for
help.

anyone have any insight into this? failing that, does anyone know of a
standard mass-market isp in the uk which is unix-compatible? i would
offer more info, but i am shockingly clueless on these subjects and
just treading water despite my frantic googling.

thanks in advance,

sam lynas

Assuming you use a broadband router as opposed to a modem then you would
configure Solaris for "generic" networking- nothing special.

Something like:
- ifconfig <device> <ip address>
- add "nameserver <nameserver-address>" entries to /etc/resolv.conf
- route add 0.0.0.0 <default gateway>

(<device is the solaris network device, e.g. hme0)
(<nameserver-address> is probably the IP address of the router)
(<default-gateway) ip address of the router).

Google will be your friend to add this to start-up scripts/proper settings
files

First of all you need to get the physical connections correct.... if
you have a voyager router which is most likely or a home hub then you
should look for an ethernet cable (often yellow) and connect that
between your router and your Sun. If you only have space for one
ethernet cable then connect your PC via the blue USB cable (you may
need to install a driver for this)

Adam has given you enough info there to get you going from the software
point of view :-)

Provided you have enough physical ports its not a problem. The config is a
bit fiddly though.

Most PCs use DHCP to configure the network. However it may be easier to
manually configure Solaris.

Perhaps a SUN newsgroup would be better. See comp.sys.sun
If you have an XP box that works copy the config onto the solaris box
Try http://www.rite-group.com/rich/solaris_nat.html

Even that might not help.Solaris is subtly different to most UNIX systems.
Like I said comp.sys.sun or comp.os.solaris
