BT Broadband - setup without using their cd?

I know that you can just plug in a BT box and it'll connect immediately
without needing a username or password, but what about the phone
settings?

I really want to avoid installing all their crappy software if possible
- do I HAVE to run the CD to get the phone socket on the BT hub to work
properly?

Hi Mike

No you don't need the CD, just type 192.168.1.254 into the browser
and it will get you into the hub to make changes.

Thanks! That part is no problem - but do I need to make changes to
settings in there to get the phone (VOIP) to work properly?

Yes, go into "Telephones", but I think you will have register with BT

That's correct, first hurdle is make sure that you have the phone
number & password, they may not have sent them out as all types of
mail are supposedly deemed insecure, on the other hand telephoney
isn't(?)

Once you have these details safely recorded goto:-

www.bt.com/bbv

Input your details & just keep clicking until you get the end and
either your telephone led will light up, showing you it's succesful or
the page will time out.

If you do get a page timeout it can be 2 things..

A)The server may be busy/down at the time, try again later or.
B)Your security rules may be to rigid ( this happened to me so I've
now got a low power 'throw away' machine without any security on it to
test when similar things happen).

Once you work your way thru the first time its ok, but the first time
can be a right b*****d !!!!

Thanks very much - great info.

In this case as it turned, the phone was working already - no settings
needed changing, other than changing the ringer options (so that the hub
phones ring when the normal phone does.)

Help very much appreciated though, and noted for future reference!
