Hi guys,

I have just spent a number of frustrating hours trying to help m
friend install her BT Broadband - I have a bit more techie knowledg
than her but not a lot i.e. much of the stuff you talk about here i
way over my head!

We got the connection up and running after a few minor hitches - sh
had a package using a modem with a USB connector which goes to th
computer and and a phone line that goes to a microfilter which the
goes to the phone line.

Everything was working - internet and e-mail - hurrah! then we left th
computer for a couple of hours (still switched on) came back and th
connection had dropped - right clicking on the 2 yellow flashing arrow
in the system tray allowed us to run a number of tests all of which sai
that there was no connection and that the modem was in 'training' mode.

What the hell does all that mean???? I feel awful because I left he
with no connection and I have no idea why as it was all up and runnin
and no settings were changed.

Any help would be very greatly appreciated:-)

best wishes
aitc

if you tryed rebooting, also make sure the pc is secure (firewall, updated
etc)
it may have just gone down, you prob find it's now working again ?

also try and get poeple to buy adsl routers instead of using the the free
USB modems
it makes it far easier to deal with support wise, install wise (ethernet
instead of silly usb things), it means the user doens't have to 'dialup'

the only minor downside there is picking a router model to buy, don't buy
the cheaper than cheap models
i'v recently bought these 2 for poeple, the linksys seems to give more info
in it's firmware, both are fine though

Agree with you on the router. But have to say, I have now installed at
least 6 of the cheap Ebuyer Safecom routers and they have all been
excellent.

Just my 2p

Cheers

You do, I hope, have the telephones running through microfilters too?
If not (or if the filters are of marginal quality) just an incoming
call, and the ringing signal, can cause the connection to drop.

Once the connection has dropped, all sorts of little things can confuse
the modem. "training" essentially means that it's trying to reconnect.
If it doesn't do so (and I've seen misleading USB error messages start
to pop up), try disconnecting the modem's USB lead for a minute or so.

Once you have the modem showing the ADSL connection, you may also have
to start Dial-Up Networking.
